Performance spaces for the variety show were limited! All acts were welcome: song, dance, a skit, stand-up comedy, dramatic reading... All we asked was that it fit in the lecture theatre, 5 minutes or less, and you provide the props.

Attendance was free, but attendees were encouraged to bring a non-perishable item (or more!) to donate to the Vancouver Food Bank!

BC Cancer Agency Annual Cancer Care Conference: November 25-27

The BC Cancer Agency's Annual Cancer Care Conference is back. It will be held at the Westin Bayshore Hotel and will feature a poster session and trainee talks, as well as all the usual stuff.

This year, members of the GrasPods exec team have been putting together a research session on the Thursday of the conference, entitled Conversations in Cancer. A tentative schedule for the day has been posted to the conference's website and will be updated as details emerge. This year, we have also secured a shuttle bus service for the day, so getting to the conference will be easier than ever before!

As part of the Annual Cancer Conference, the BCCA is also holding a Community Cancer Forum, 9:30-3:30 on Saturday, November 27, at the Westin Bayshore. This is a chance to learn the human side of the cancer story. The BCCA has put together a forum for patients and staff to highlight cancer patients’ journey. The forum is open to the public, so invite anyone you think might be interested. Please see the poster for more details.

Biostatistics Workshop: October 14, 10-11am

Looking for a copy of the slides used in the presentation? Click here.

GrasPods presented an introductory workshop to answer all the questions you ever wanted to know about stats but were too afraid to ask. This session was held in the Diamond Family Theatre at the BCCRC.

Dr. Steven McKinney from the Molecular Oncology department covered topics such as:

  • What constitutes good study design/data
  • When to use what statistical test to analyze data
  • What does SD, SEM, CI say about variation in data

This workshop did not cover how to derive formulas nor how to use specific software! The focus was on understanding the strengths and weaknesses of statistical tools and when to use them! The workshop did not analyze your data for you.

Miss the session? Dr. McKinney has kindly provided the PowerPoint slides from his presentation for your personal use.

We would also like to thank Molecular Oncology PI Sam Aparicio for his support for this workshop.

Terry Fox Works Day: September 17

The students of the Interdisciplinary Oncology Program (IOP), with the support of GrasPods, put on a Games Day to raise funds for the Terry Fox Foundation. The event took place in the main floor common area of the BCCRC and featured kid-friendly carnival-type games and draws for prizes. Food was also be available for purchase.

Thanks to everyone who came out to make this event a great success! Over $2000 was raised for the Terry Fox Foundation. Plenty of PIs got wet in our hugely successful balloon splash, as did Terry Fox's brother, Darrell. Photos of this event will be posted to the photo gallery soon.

Successfully Applying for Graduate Scholarships seminars: September 9 (Part 1) and September 17 (Part 2)

GrasPods hosted a two-part seminar series on successfully applying for graduate scholarships. Both sessions were held in the Diamond Family Theatre at the BC Cancer Research Centre and were free of charge. Light refreshments were served at each session.

Brendan Morey, the Graduate Awards Manager from the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FoGS), gave a lecture and hosted a question period pertaining to the technical considerations of applying for scholarships, including eligibility, FoGS requirements and internal and external application deadlines.

Part II: How to Prepare a Successful Application (Friday, September 17, 1:00-2:00)
We heard from Dr. Pamela Hoodless, a scientist at the BCCRC and seasoned scholarship reviewer, on choosing the right scholarship, writing a successful scholarship application, and tips for the technical writing of research proposals.

Summer Outdoor Soccer: Monday evenings throughout the summer, 5:30pm

This year, we played at Charleson Park Field on Mondays throughout the summer (June 14-August 31), starting at 5:30pm each evening. Contact person was Tim Halim. Everyone was welcome and certainly many came out to enjoy the good weather this summer!

August 12, 2010: Annual BBQ

This year's BBQ was another resounding success! Plenty of people took some time out of the lab to enjoy some of the beautiful weather we were having with their co-workers. There were hamburgers (or veggie burgers), Kubb, and other great games, not to mention the many excellent prizes that were won. Those who brought their own plate and utensils (in order to save the planet) - were also entered to win some special prizes. Families were welcome!

This year's building-wide bbq scheduled started at 1pm in the same location as last year, Jericho Beach East (see map below). Tickets this year were fully subsidized and distributed through the floor reps.

Research Day: January 21, 2010

GrasPods hosted a building wide research day in the format of a mini conference. A final wrap-up, including a list of all prize winners, will be in a forthcoming newsletter.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Dr. James R. Downing had to cancel his trip to Vancouver. The keynote session was replaced by "BCCA Grant Competition Federation Cage Match 2010." This presentation was based on recent findings linking lymphoma and EZH2 discovered right here in BCCA. The breakthrough was just reported in Nature Genetics. Dr. Marco Marra discussed these findings. This was followed by the “cage-match”: 3 competitors, Dr. Gerald Krystal, Dr. Joseph Connors, and Dr. Peter Lansdorp each made a case of where a 10 million dollar grant should go to follow up the discovery. Finally, Dr. Martin Hirst wrapped up with a presentation of where the GSC is going next. We hope this was a stimulating and educational exchange. GrasPods extends our heartfelt thanks to the aforementioned scientists and clinician for stepping in on such short notice to put this together.
